Chief Resident
Welcome and thank you for your interest in Cleveland Clinic Children’s Pediatric Residency Program! As we continue with an all-virtual interview season, we hope to provide you with information on the excellent clinical, educational, and research opportunities that our program offers. Pediatrics at Cleveland Clinic was established in the 1950’s and has grown over the years to a complete children’s hospital, comprising of 389 inpatient beds and 50+ outpatient clinics across the network. We have more than 300 pediatric specialists ready to train our residents, from treating otitis media to managing multi-visceral transplants. And now, Cleveland Clinic Children’s is ranked in nine subspecialties by U.S. News & World Report, with two subspecialties ranked in the top ten.
Our program provides one of the most comprehensive and unique pediatric residency experiences:
Training Sites
Following Cleveland Clinic’s mission to deliver world class care to the local and global community, the pediatric residents take care of patients at three main locations. We have two buildings on Main Campus— one for our inpatients (M Building) and one for our outpatients (R Building). The M Building has state-of-the-art pediatric, pediatric cardiac, and neonatal intensive care units, which are staffed 24 hours a day with in-house senior staff. It also houses an intermediate care unit, hematology/ oncology unit, and an epilepsy monitoring unit. The brand-new R Building provides comprehensive pediatric care under one roof, including an infusion center, phlebotomy and radiology services, cardiac and pulmonary function labs, procedure suites, and the pediatric education offices. Additional services, including pediatric emergency medicine, inpatient pediatrics, nursery, neonatology, and inpatient child and adolescent psychiatry, also extend to the local communities at Fairview and Hillcrest Hospitals, located on the west and east sides of Cleveland, respectively. Additionally, residents have the unique opportunity to rotate at our freestanding Cleveland Clinic's Children's Hospital for Rehabilitation. It includes a pediatric dialysis unit, developmental pediatrics program, feeding disorders clinic, pain management program, and an autism center/ school.
Immersion Scheduling
Unlike typical month-to-month scheduling, our program adopted immersion scheduling (or the X+Y model) over five years ago. It has been applauded by the residents for multiple reasons; however, the main being its commitment to resident wellness. Residents spend 4 weeks on an elective with continuous clinical time, and 2 weeks on an outpatient elective integrated with continuity clinic — this type of X+Y is called 4+2. This schedule ensures that a resident never has back-to-back inpatient months and that your time is focused on the elective. Did we mention that residents have administrative time (i.e., a “wellness half day”) every Friday afternoon during Y-blocks?
Individualized Educational Opportunities
In addition to our core pediatric curriculum and electives, residents have the ability to tailor their residency experience based on personal interests and career goals. Nearly all of our residents choose to complete a second continuity clinic (whether it be in primary care pediatrics or a pediatric subspeciality), an individualized learning plan (an elective entirely designed by the resident), and a research or quality improvement project.
Whether your career goals include academic medicine, community practice, or further fellowship training, Cleveland Clinic Children’s will give you the foundation you need. Residents finish our program fully prepared to handle any career path they choose. We have experienced and passionate faculty mentors in all areas to help guide you towards a successful pediatric career.
We hope you consider joining us in the next phase of your professional life! We look forward to hearing from you during this year's application season. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions about our program, recruitment process, or living in Cleveland!
